EUGENE, Ore - The Beacons opened up their 2010 home schedule on a strong note Sunday, sweeping a double-header from Walla Walla University, 6-1 and 6-1.
Cassie Bishop had a pair of homers in game one and
Lissa Hatefi (pictured) went 5-for-5 on the day to fuel the Beacon wins.
The Beacons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one, when
Megan Mazanec picked up an RBI walk and
Corrie Gustafson followed with an RBI hit-by-pitch. NCU added a run in the third off of Bishop's lead-off bomb, but Walla Walla then got one back in the top of the fourth inning, on an RBI single from Andrea Pedro.
Northwest Christian pulled away in the fourth inning with three runs. Hatefi hit a one-out single and
Brittany Robles brought her home with a double, then Bishop cranked her second straight homer to left-center, for two more runs.
Bishop finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Hatefi was also 3-for-3 with two runs and Robles went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
Kalyssa Koontz (3-1) allowed just one run over four innings, giving up five hits and
Jenna Royce closed it out with three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.
It took until the third inning of the second game, but the Beacons once again jumped out on top, scoring two runs.
Kelsey Combs hit a lead-off triple and
Karli Vath followed with a walk. Vath then stole second base, and a mishandled throw allowed Combs to come in from third. Vath then got her second stolen base of the inning and was brought home on an RBI single by Hatefi.
The Wolves scored their run in the fourth inning, getting a bases loaded walk, but the Beacons again put the game away with a three-run fourth inning.
Emma Armstrong hit a two-run triple and Hatefi picked up another RBI single. The final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bishop came home off a single from
Brooke Davis.
Davis (4-5) allowed one run on four hits over four innings, while striking out four batters.
Becca Lillegard continued a string of strong bullpen performances, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings.
Hatefi was 2-for-2 with two RBI, Combs finished 2-for-3 with two runs and Becca Lillegard hit 3-for-4.
Northwest Christian (8-10) will be back in action on Saturday as they play the University of British Columbia on a neutral site, hosted by Concordia-Portland.
