MARIAN, Ind. – Sophomore Brittany Arch can now claim to be the 14th fastest 5k runner in the nation in the NAIA, after taking a 14th-place finish in the 5000m finals at the national championships on Saturday.
In Friday’s semifinals, Arch ran an 18:36 in 90 degree heat, taking the 16th spot in the 16-person field for the final.
Head Coach Heike McNeil said, “I am really excited for Brittany. She had a really small outside chance at making it to the finals because she was only seeded 24th, but was just 24 seconds away from the leader.”
Advancing to the final, Arch the closed out her season with a run of 18:40, beating out a runner from The College of Idaho in the process. McNeil said, “Brittany ran a very smart and gutsy race today, and we are all really proud of her.”
Also running at the NAIA National Championships was senior Bethany Howard, who qualified for both the 5000m and 10000m events. Howard ran the 10,000m event, but was forced to withdraw with two laps to go.
