Editor’s Note: This is the sixth in a 10-part series recapping the Top Ten sports moments of the 2009-2010 year at Northwest Christian University as compiled by the Beacon Athletic Department. Every year there seem to be a select few games that stand out from the crowd. Be it a record setting performance, a dominating victory, a last-minute loss after a controversial call, or an upset win over a ranked opponent.
During the 2009-2010 season, there seemed to be more than a select few for Northwest Christian, including a number of high profile upsets for the Beacons:
October 5, 2009 - Men's Golf tops Concordia for First Ever CCC Tournament Win
Justin Ahrens won the individual title and the NCU men's golf team defeated Concordia by 12 strokes to win a CCC regular season tournament for the first time in school history. Concordia would go on to win the Cascade Conference Regular Season Championship.
January 16, 2010 - Women's Basketball Beats #20 College of Idaho on the road, 66-65
Four players scored in double-figures as the Beacons beat the Coyotes for the first time ever. The win was also the first ever for NCU against a team ranked in the NAIA's Top-25.
January 29, 2010 - Men's Basketball tops #3 Oregon Tech in Overtime, 79-76
NCU overcame a ten-point second-half deficit, forced overtime on a Ben Voogd three-pointer as time-expired, and won the game on a Voogd layup with 12-seconds remaining in OT.
February 5, 2010 - Men's Basketball Beats #7 Warner Pacific, 67-65
One week after his game-winning heroics over OIT, Ben Voogd did it again against Warner Pacific, hitting a tear-drop jumper over one of the NAIA's best defenders, pushing NCU to their second win over a top-ten opponent
February 25, 2010 - Softball Team knocks off #11 Concordia University - Irvine, 2-0
Brooke Davis struck out four, throwing a complete-game shut-out and Brittany Robles grabbed two RBI as the Beacons picked up their biggest upset in school history.
