Editor’s Note: This is the seventh in a 10-part series recapping the Top Ten sports moments of the 2009-2010 year at Northwest Christian University as compiled by the Beacon Athletic Department. It was a record setting year for Beacon Athletics on the field of play. Nine athletes, the highest total in school history, earned First-Team All-CCC honors and another host of athletes grabbed honorable mention nods from the conference.
In the fall, senior Greg Erickson went out on a high note, earning his first First-Team All-CCC selection. Erickson finished the season with a team-high seven goals, along with two assists for a team-leading 16 points. He ranked second in the conference for shots per game, sixth for goals and seventh for points. Erickson also scored the game-winner in NCU’s lone victory of the season.
Stephanie Hescock became NCU's first All-CCC winner in cross country, finishing in ninth place at the Cascade Conference Championships, with the third-best time in school history.
Earning honorable-mention from the conference during the fall season were Cassie Bishop in volleyball, along with the foursome of Heather Henderson, Jeneca Hoidal, Alyssa Romero and Brittany Yip in women's soccer.
For the winter season, Ben Voogd earned First-Team recognition. The team scoring leader also earned CCC Newcomer of the Year honors and was an NAIA All-American honorable mention.
Earning honorable mention from the conference for women's basketball was Lori Renner. Renner led the Beacons in scoring this year, averaging 12.6 points per game and she was NCU’s leading rebounder at 4.9 boards per game. She led the team in scoring 15 times and scored at least 15 points in seven games.
The spring season saw an explosion with six First-Team nods, including three for the golf programs. Justin Ahrens, Brent McKee and Ashley King all earned their third-straight All-Conference honors. Ahrens was the runner-up in the Player of the Year race as well.
For softball, Brooke Davis and Cassie Bishop each earned their second All-CCC honor. Davis earned her second straight award after batting.323 to lead the Beacons and set school records with 44 hits and 30 RBI. The sophomore also got it done in the circle, with 10 wins and a 2.74 ERA, along with 125 strikeouts. Bishop, who was also an All-CCC selection as a freshman, had a dominant junior season, leading the conference with 11 home runs while breaking school records for HRs, total bases, and extra-base hits. She was named the Northwest Christian University Female Athlete of the Year this season.
Another spring honor in softball went to sophomore Megan Mazanec, who earned her second straight Golden Glove award from the conference at third base.
Grabbing the final All-CCC award was senior Bethany Howard, who took second-place in the 10,000m race and was just five seconds out of first place.
All told, 16 NCU athletes were honors during the 2009-2010 season for their accomplishments on the court or on the field.
